The flag of Kiribati was adopted in 1979 on their day of independence. The flag features a red space for the sky and the other half full of blue and white waves. In the centre the sun is rising behind the waves with a frigatebird flying overhead. The 17 rays of the sun represent the 16 Gilbert Islands and Banaba.

The flag has a white strip on the side with two metal eyelets.
